People Power is making a difference. The proposed parking fees are being deferred until April 22nd. NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Read what your councillors have said in the article by The Mourne Observer. It would appear they think we are confused. We know exactly what they are proposing and we COMPLETELY disagree with it.
A deferral has not gone far enough as we want a firm commitment that they will not be implemented in Kilbroney Park FULL STOP.
The story featured in several local newspaper editions this week but one quote concerns us and that is the one on the front page of the Newry Reporter (screenshot above) which says
"But you do come to a point where that doesn't matter because they're intent on ramming this through."
It matters to us. It matters to you. It matters to over 2178 of you who have signed this petition so far. We are not confused. We are not giving up. We don't think you should either. Using our collective voice we are the guardian and custodians of Kilbroney Park. Our rates already pay for it. Council might be intent of doing it but our resolve is stronger and we will not rest until our park is free for all.
Two interesting developments have taken place in the last few days. One is the purchase price of the plastic pod quoted online by the company who made it as retailing for approx. £8000 plus VAT ***we cannot confirm Council purchase price but this is what it would cost if we were to purchase it***. The second is the job advert for the person to occupy the hut and take your hard-earned money. Take a look at the rate of pay times the hours advertised. How many families could park for free in Kilbroney Park for approx £8000 plus VAT and how many families could park for free after the wages for Park Attendants to collect parking fees for the year?
Let's keep sharing and signing folks. We have a job to do. WE are the custodians of Kilbroney Park and we will not allow this to happen on our watch. Oh, and to the Councillors - we are NOT confused. We will not give up.
