Preserve Elgin County Railway Museum's Land for Historical Education

The Issue

I have been a part of this community, living as a neighbour to the Elgin County Railway Museum (ECRM) and Michigan Central Shops, even before the museum moved in. The property has always been considered parkland, with plans drawn up thanks to a generous donation and displayed around the property. To our surprise, we discovered that the museum was negotiating with a builder who wanted to construct 240 units amidst our century-old homes.

This proposed construction goes against everything that ECRM stands for. The land should be used for its intended purpose - to educate and celebrate our deep rich history in the rail industry. It is crucial that ECRM follows their mandate to preserve and protect all railway assets.

According to data from Transport Canada, railways played an essential role in shaping Canada's history and development. They were instrumental in connecting communities across vast landscapes and facilitating trade (Transport Canada). This rich history deserves preservation not just for us but also for future generations.

We must ensure that this land remains dedicated to celebrating our railway heritage rather than being sold off for apartment buildings. We call on ECRM not only as neighbours but also as stewards of local history - let's preserve this land together! Please sign this petition if you believe in preserving historical sites over commercial development.
