The Issue

This petition asks the Bergen County Academies to preserve electrical engineering by keeping it as a core class, creating an elective, or offering a project-based alternative, so that students can continue learning an essential area of modern engineering.

Electrical engineering is a foundational skill for students interested in robotics, civil engineering, and many other engineering subfields. As robotics, automation, and hardware-based technologies continue to grow, students need opportunities to learn the circuits, electrical systems, and hardware concepts that support these fields.

BCA is planning to remove electrical engineering from its core course offerings following the retirement of Mr. Michael Liva. While the loss of an experienced teacher is understandable, eliminating the subject would leave future students without access to an essential area of engineering education. Currently, there is no clear replacement course, elective, or project-based alternative that would allow students to continue developing these skills.

Keeping electrical engineering is essential for ensuring that future BCA students remain competitive with graduates of other technical high schools and continue to receive a well-rounded engineering education. BCA has been and remains one of the nation's top high schools, and preserving electrical engineering as a core class would help maintain its status.
