Preserve community access to Dixon Playing Fields

Preserve community access to Dixon Playing Fields
The Issue
Dixon Playing Fields has been vibrant part of our community for generations, serving as a meeting place where friendships are forged and memories are created. This field is more than just a patch of green; it is the heart of our community and a symbol of the freedom and spontaneity that makes our neighbourhood special.
Lately, the threat of losing this precious access looms over us. Plans to fence off the playing field and restrict its usage, potentially = through bookings will disrupt the open, inclusive atmosphere that we all cherish. Such a move would not only fracture long-standing community bonds but also stifle the potential for new connections. Our field acts as a social hub, where children play freely, families gather, and adults unwind after a long day. To impose barriers on it is to impose barriers on our community's spirit.
Statistics show that communities with accessible open spaces enjoy better mental and physical health, stronger social ties, and overall higher quality of life. According to Public Health England, access to recreational spaces is essential for well-being, and our playing fields are integral to this.
We do not oppose improvements that enhance the usability of Dixon Playing Fields for everyone. We recognise that it is a shared space and a football club uses the pitch. However it needs to remain a shared space, especially considering there is already a full fenced off pitch. However, fencing it off for controlled access undermines its fundamental purpose and the covenant through which it was gifted to the local community by the Dixon family. There is also factual errors on the planning application Application Ref: LA04/2025/1695/F (https://minutes.belfastcity.gov.uk/documents/s125564/LA04%202025%201695%20F%20Dixon%20Playing%20Fields.pdf
There has been no community engagement to discuss upgrades for all. As a community, we should he involved through consultation on the investment in maintenance and upgrades that benefit the whole community without restricting its accessibility.
Please join us in urging the local council to keep the Dixon Playing Fields open and accessible to all. Let's protect our beloved community space and preserve it for future generations to enjoy. Sign this petition and help us keep our field a free and open haven for everyone.
