The Issue

We, the undersigned, call upon the City of Calgary to reconsider its plan to redevelop Aurora Park, and surrounding areas, for residential and commercial purposes. This land provides green space that enhances the well-being of Calgary residents. Once it is gone, we cannot bring it back. This natural land is home to a rich diversity of endangered flora and fauna that thrive in its unique ecosystem, and we believe that converting it into a concrete jungle would irreversibly harm the environment and wildlife that depend on it for survival such as the endangered birds that call the wetland home. The Prarie grasslands are one of the most endangered habitats and we have the opportunity to preserve it for future generations. The park also has natural benefits like the fact that it mitigates a flooding risk in the area. Furthermore, this land has Indigenous history which has not been explored. This development will forever close the door to documenting undiscovered history. To summarize, thousands of people take advantage of this park for their physical and mental health on a daily basis and we the people want to maintain Aurora Park as it is.
