This was the first year, in my lifetime, that I successfully watched every single feature length motion picture nominated for the Oscars (minus the 15 short films). Every single film that scored even one nomination – I pulled it off.
And yet... it seems like after consuming several dozen hours worth of cinema that many filmmakers poured their heart, soul, talents and treasures into... this whole 'not presenting eight categories live on television' isn't real. Despite all the support that this petition got the last time (in 2019 with over 16,000 signatures), and all the major names that lent their voice to support what this petition was about, it seems like a damn shame.
We have less than 72-hours until showtime, so the best we can do is to keep posting this petition and hope for the best. Perhaps, in some strange way, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences can prove all 3,000 of us wrong.
I love this industry. I love this art form. I love that the Academy Awards traces a history of show-business back to the late-1920s. I don't want them to fail, and I don't want to see a "celebration" as atrocious as last springs. Therefore, shamefully, an instinctual wish is to see them absolutely tank this year – for the sake of this wonderful business we call 'show,' I hope for the best.
