We, the Coalition of International Students and Allies (CISA) at Columbia Theological Seminary (CTS), are demanding the immediate re-establishment of the Office of International Programs which is the only department focused exclusively on immigrant students. We also demand the formal recognition of CISA by the Board of Trustees and CISA’s input on institutional decisions involving the Office of International Programs, international students and/or immigrant students as a whole.

Immigrant students, both U.S. and international, make up the largest minority student population at Columbia. Nevertheless, on January 31, 2019 President Leanne Van Dyk announced the upcoming closure of the Office of International Programs to all CTS students and faculty. As part of dismantling the Office, President Van Dyk also made the culturally-biased decision to replace the work of well-regarded immigrant faculty members at the Office of International Programs with non-immigrant faculty from other departments. Despite an overwhelmingly negative response to her decision and multiple internal requests to be sympathetic to the concerns of immigrant students, President Van Dyk repeatedly and categorically rejected all core concerns. The CTS administration responded by saying that they are “doing what is best for the international students” and for immigrant students to “trust them.”

Presenting Issues

The systematic dismissal and silencing of the voices of immigrant students lift up Columbia Theological Seminary’s historic White-centered leadership and practices despite marketing itself as a seminary existing to “serve the world.” As both enrollment in American seminaries and participation in American churches have declined, CTS (like many other seminaries) has aggressively marketed itself to immigrant students in countries where Christianity is thriving.

CTS proudly boasts on its website and marketing materials that CTS represents 16 countries and that 50% of its 300+ students are persons of color. Their homepage navigation bar even highlights a “Korean” page written in Korean and English, touting CTS’ commitment to serving and nurturing Korean American and Korean international students. Note that students of Korean descent make up the largest minority contingent at CTS.

Through their recent decisions and purported “strategic realignments,” the current administration has demonstrated that they do not care to support the immigrant and international community nor the global church. We want CTS’ internationally-focused mission statement and values to align with their actual treatment of immigrant students. We object to CTS’ pandering to Korean and other immigrant students for our dollars and enrollment while treating us – both students and faculty – as second-class.

We propose the following solutions to the administration:

• The reinstatement of the Office of International Programs;
• That the Director of the Office of International Programs be filled by an immigrant faculty member who is globally trained and empathetic to the interests of immigrant and international students; and
• Seats at the decision-making table for representatives of the Coalition of International Students and Allies when key decisions are made related to the Office of International Programs, or decisions impacting immigrant and/or international students as a whole.

We as members of the body of Christ are concerned with these changes and their effects on this our immigrant/international community. And while we are focused on the treatment of immigrant students and faculty, we stand in solidarity with African American, Indigenous, and all other individuals who know they will benefit from a truly multicultural environment. It is precisely because we love this community that we are trying to protect these existing resources so that future generations of immigrant students may feel welcome and supported here.

콜럼비아 신학대학교의 독단적 운영을 당장 멈춰라: 인종차별적 학교 운영에 맞서 이민자 학생들이 뭉쳐 일어설 것을 촉구한다.

콜럼비아 신학대학원(Columbia Theological Seminary, CTS) 인터내셔널 학생과 그 지지자들 연합(the Coalition of International Students and Allies, 이하 CISA)은 국제학생처(Office of International Programs)의 복원을 촉구합니다. 국제학생처는 그동안 CTS에서 이민자 학생들을 전담하는 유일한 부서였습니다. 우리는 또한 CTS 이사회가 CISA를 공식적으로 인정하고, 국제학생처/인터내셔널 학생/이민자 학생과 관련된 결정을 내릴 때 CISA의 의견을 반영해줄 것을 촉구합니다.

현재 미국 출신과 외국 출신을 합친 이민자 학생은 콜럼비아 신학대학원 내에서 소수계 가운데 가장 많은 비중을 차지하고 있습니다. 그러나 2019년 1월 31일, 이 대학 반 다이크(Van Dyk) 총장은 학생과 교수, 교직원들에게 국제학생처의 폐쇄를 발표했습니다. 반 다이크 총장은 또 국제학생처를 폐쇄하기 위한 수순의 일환으로, 국제학생처에서 존경받는 이민자 교수를 몰아내고 비이민자 교수로 대체하는 문화적으로 편향된 결정을 내렸습니다. 현재 교내에는 이 결정에 대한 부정적 의견이 많으며, 이민자 학생들의 처지를 걱정하는 건의가 잇따르고 있습니다. 그러나 이에 아랑곳 없이 반 다이크 총장은 모든 건의를 계속 묵살하고 있습니다. CTS 리더들, 총장과 학장들은,  “모든 결정은 인터내셔널 학생들과 이민자 학생들을 위한 것"이라는 말만 되풀이하고 있습니다."

당면한 문제

이처럼 이민자 학생들의 의견을 계속 묵살하고 무시하는 콜럼비아 신학대학원의 처사는 이 대교의 계속된 백인 위주의 경영과 운영 때문입니다. 이는 “전 세계를 위해 봉사하겠다”는 이 대학의 선전과도 어긋난 것입니다. 현재 미국내 신학교에서 미국인 학생과 미국 교회의 숫자는 급감하고 있습니다. 이에 따라 콜럼비아 신학대학원은 다른 신학교와 마찬가지로, 기독교가 성장하고 있는 국가 출신의 이민자 학생들을 유치하기 위해 공격적 마케팅을 벌여왔습니다. 콜럼비아 신학대학원은 홈페이지에서 300여명 이상의 학생들이 유색인종이며 16개 국가에서 온 유학생들이 재학중이라고 선전해왔습니다. 심지어 콜럼비아 신학대학원은 홈페이지 안내문에 한국어와 영어로 “한국인 학생” 코너를 따로 마련해두고, 한국계 미국인 학생과 한국 출신 유학생들을 적극 지원하고 있다고 약속하기도 했습니다.

콜럼비아 신학대학원은 소위 “전략적 재편성”이라는 명분 하에 갖가지 결정을 내리고 있으나, 이는 현 대학원 지도부가 이민자 학생과 인터내셔널 학생, 그리고 전 세계적 교회건립에는 신경쓰지 않고 있음을 보여주는 증거입니다. 우리는 콜럼비아 신학대학원이 주장하는 “국제적인 사명”에 따라 이민자 학생들을 대해줄 것을 요구합니다. 우리는 콜럼비아 신학대학원의 한국인과 다른 이민자 대학생들을 ‘돈줄’로 취급하는 것을 거부하며, 이민자 학생과 교수를 2등 시민(second-class) 취급하는데 반대합니다.

우리는 대학 지도부를 대상으로 다음과 같은 사항을 촉구합니다.

• 국제 학생처의 복원
• 국제 학생처 처장에 국제적으로 훈련받고 이민자 학생들의 처지를 이해할 수 있는 이민자 교수를 임명할 것
• 국제학생처, 또는 이민자/인터내셔널 학생들과 관련된 사항을 결정함에 있어 인터내셔널 학생과 그 지지자들 연합(CISA)의 대표자를 참석시킬 것

우리는 예수 그리스도의 몸 안에 뭉친 사람으로서, 이번 결정과 변화가 이민자/인터내셔널 학생들에게 미칠 영향에 대해 우려합니다. 우리는 이민자 학생들과 교수들의 처우에 대해 다루고 있긴 하지만, 우리는 흑인과 아메리카 원주민, 그리고 다문화 환경의 수혜를 받고 있는 모든 사람들과 연대하고 있습니다. 이것이야말로 우리가 지키려는 커뮤니티를 사랑하기 때문이며, 차세대 이민자 학생들이 콜럼비아 신학대학원에 환영받으며 지원받을 수 있는 길이기 때문입니다.
