Dear Mr. President,

Good day!

I am Athena Sy. I am currently a Grade Five student at Domuschola International School, an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, which espouses a concept-based curriculum and encourages their students to inquire and take real-life action from what they learn in the classroom.

There are 17 U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), they are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. I chose SDG 14 : Life below water and the highlight of this exhibition is for us to propose and do sustainable projects related to our self-directed research on global issues we are passionate to solve. I chose Illegal fishing and Bottom trawling in particular. Imagine having a country without fish and dead corals most people and kids will die and I don’t think that is something you want to happen. I have some suggestions and ideas on how we can solve the problem of bottom trawling:

1. Work with the communities affecter and Department of Agriculture-BFAR to monitor the seas and together with the Department of Tourism, create a ‘Responsibly Caught’ fish brand;
2. Increase the fines for violators;
3. Work with resorts and hotels to Reward those fishermen who can prove that the   fish they caught was ‘Responsibly Caught’ not trawled. In reward the resorts and hotels will allow the fishermen to sell it to their resort and hotel and they will get more money than they got before.
4. The money from the higher fines, and the money from increase in tourism can be used to make underwater sensor working with the Department of Science and Technology to make a sensor that detects Bottom Trawlers
5. To help create massive awareness about this, I am also working  with media to warn fishermen about the effects of bottom trawling and create the brand.

I hope you can consider these ideas and to show how seriously concerned we are going to get you at least 50,000 signatures for this petition.

Sincerely,

Athena Sy
