Dam Safety

Currently, the Government of Alberta is pursuing an Environmental Impact Assessment on the Springbank Off-Stream Reservoir (SR1) project, and an alternative option known as McLean Creek (MC1). What you may not know is that BOTH of these proposals fall DRASTICALLY SHORT of the required 100 million cubic meter capacity needed to protect us from a 2013-size flood event (Reference: 2014 Provincial Flood Mitigation Advisory Panel). The current design capacity of SR1 is only 70 million cubic meters; MC1 has a design capacity of only 56 million cubic meters! SR1 is so close to Calgary that in the event its capacity was exceeded, the wall of water is estimated to take only 15 minutes to reach Calgary. MC1 is even closer to vulnerable communities.
