"It's the most heart wrenching pain. Losing my beautiful son Jacob at just 15 years of age broke me. And now every day, I have to live with knowing he may have been saved had a defibrillator been accessible. No parent should have to go through this. Is there no duty of care for our young?" – Leeann Richards.
Channel Seven health editor, Dr Andrew Rochford and University of Sydney cardiologist, Professor Chris Semsarian are campaigning to save young Australians from sudden cardiac death.
Four young people die every week in Australia from sudden cardiac death. Their best chance for survival is early defibrillation and CPR, and every minute that passes the survival rate drops by about 10%.
“It's stories like Jacob’s that break our hearts. Too many young people are dying suddenly – yet unbelievably, our public schools still don't have mandatory CPR training or defibrillators installed.”
Right now, despite defibrillators being available in private schools and public schools in other states – NSW Department of Education's out-of-date policy doesn't support the use of defibrillators on public school grounds.
Defibrillators are inexpensive, easy to use, and could potentially save lives. It’s a no brainer to have them in every school in Australia.
We need your help to convince Premier Baird not to risk the lives of more children like Jacob – we need defibrillators and CPR training in schools now. We can't delay any longer.
