SAVE DYING HISTORIC KATRAJ ZOO LAKE
The Issue
Katraj Lake in Pune - India is one of the important lakes in Pune city (Maharashtra), which has a historical background. It was constructed during the Peshwa Era and is situated in south area of Pune covering near about 80-82 hectors. It is the combination of two lakes. The first one is acting as sedimentation tank and water comes from the first lake into the Katraj lake. Both the dams have gates at the bottom level, which can be used to release excess water into the Ambil Odha. In the period of Peshwas, the Katraj lake was used to supply water through an underground canal to the city of Pune.
Now days the water quality of Katraj lake is severely degraded due to the polluted water from surrounding areas directly entering the lake. The lake is silted and covered by vegetation. Entire lake is covered with Water Hyacinth from last 2 years. People staying in nearby societies close to the vicinity of the lakes are experiencing stench smell arising from the lake, and has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. There has been steep increase in cases which are getting reported for Dengue and other illness. Last year thousands of fish were found dead in Katraj lake exposing what is being described as inefficiency of the civic administration in managing the lake. After finding dead fish floating on water, "Preliminary inquiry indicated the death is due to lack of oxygen. This is due to water hyacinth covering the lake.
THE HISTORIC LAKE IS SLOWLY DYING.
The Pune Municipal Corporation’s failure to remove hyacinth from the Katraj Lake and provide a permanent solution to arrest growth of water hyacinth and pollutant entering the lake has resulted in the ecological death of the water body.
Through this petition we urge Environment Minister of India to help and advice corporation to save Historic Katraj Zoo Lake from dying.
