Prairie View for the better

The Issue

Prairie View Middle School is a home for unstable mental health in students as young as 11 years old; it needs to stop. I am finally seeing all the flaws in this school; there are a lot. I am suggesting a PEACEFUL protest against PVMS, and I believe a petition to change these rules would genuinely help. We may all be young, but we are still people, which means we all have equal rights. This school takes our rights away. According to the First Amendment of the Constitution, we all have a right to peaceably assemble and petition against the school.  I surveyed a few students, and most complained about a very long list of how horrible this school's rules are, so I believe we need to either have our principal change these rules or replace her with someone who will. I am leaving the middle school this year, but I care about the students who will continue here. I have only been protesting for this cause for a week, and so much has happened already. I made a decent amount of posters the other day, and me and a few other students l had been working with posted them up. I got down to the last few posters, and our assistant principal and a few teachers stopped me. I was confronted and told that I wasn't allowed to put the posters up without speaking to our principal. I wasn't given any reason as to why, I was just told to tear them all down. I tried to speak up and tell them why these posters NEEDED to stay up, and I had tried just talking to admin about this. But no shocker, they didn't listen. I just got scolded and ignored. Additionally, a few weeks ago our principal made an announcement saying that she was planning on purchasing phone locks. This irritates me and many other students greatly, for obvious reasons. One of my amazing friends did the math and, in her words " If the school were to get those phone locks... It would be around $16.4 thousand dollars, and the average school spending is $12,780,971 dollars. That is including our poor food services and transportation." Our theatre and music programs are incredibly underfunded. Our director has to pay for most of our props, costumes, sets, and programing directly out of pocket. She has her own life, she should have a right to spend that money on food and bills or things in her personal life. She is kind enough to pay for our theatre, instead of using funding. If we have a budget to lock up our comfort and safety, we have the budget to make things right. It is cruel that students may need to get their phones locked away for the entire day. We sadly live in a world where that is just dangerous. If we lock our phones away, and there is an emergency, our lives are even more in danger. If you have the thrill to control our lives, we gain the will to make this right. I am determined to help the future students in this school. Grace Bird, you will fix this, or children will continue to suffer more because of you.
