Stop the closure of academic courses at National Power Training Institute (NPTI)
Stop the closure of academic courses at National Power Training Institute (NPTI)
The Issue
NPTI College is a National Apex body for Training and Human Resources Development in Power Sector under Ministry of Power. It is one of only college in India where MBA, BE and other academic courses in Power sector is provided. It has a long and proud history of generating Power Sector professionals for last 20 years and has produced more than 5000 professionals.
We are pained to hear recent reports that there is a proposal being considered for closure of MBA and other Engineering courses in NPTI.
We believe the decision to close the college is being rushed without proper consultation with the college community, alumni and other stakeholders. We would like to bring out some of the key points in support of continuing with this course:
1. The courses were started in late 90's with an objective of providing qualified managers and engineers to drive the transforming sector which was facing crippling issues
2. So far, the sector has faced many challenges and we, NPTIans have seen ups and downs and have been serving various organisations to help them meet the challenges
3. Also, students from NPTI are working across various segments and have seen the sector developments closely and are hopeful that with the current good governance, the sector would flourish further and thus there would be a need of constant stream of young professionals who can drive many initiatives and organisations to great highs
4. Abruptly closure of the course would badly dent the pride of already passed out students who are working in various capacities, and also hurt career prospects of yet to be passed out students and those who are at junior levels.
5. Those at junior levels would be hit the worst as they would not be able to relate to what they are doing with the educational qualification which would be discontinued (MBA Power,BE and other courses).
6. The above factors relate to close to 5000 persons who have passed out. They would be wondering that what went wrong as the institute could not keep up with the sector requirements and plan according to economic scenario.
7. A part of the problem was owing to the course being linked to MDU which in our view could not modify course requirements from time to time.
8. We therefore request you to kindly consider following solutions:
a. NPTI continuing the courses as a deemed university
b. Shifting the course to any other University or Institution which can keep it running
9. The above, we believe is necessary as the sector needs quality professionals at a constant pace, though the batch strength can be adjusted w.r.t economic environment.
We request your kind consideration of facts as highlighted above and seek your kind help in giving guidance so that course can be continued.
We, the undersigned call on the Minister of Power, Hon Piyush Goyal, to stop the closure of MBA, BE and other course at NPTI College and allow the school to continue it’s 20 years legacy and work with the college to find a way forward.
