

Power-Banks Instead of Data-Centres
The Issue
Last year Britain wasted a staggering £1.47 billion by turning down wind turbines and paying gas plants to switch on, and in Germany compensation costs for the curtailment of renewable energy hit €435 million, highlighting the mass scale of green energy being wasted [ EURONEWS (Mar 27, 2026) ]
Our current fossil infrastructure is based on IMMEDIATE production, where energy is produced and consumed at the same time, and over-supply doesn’t exist. The problem, is that since renewables CONTINUOUSLY produce energy regardless of the immediate demand, then in this case over-supply does exist, which forces providers to completely shut down production and throw away billions worth of excess energy.
Fossils are limited, renewables are unlimited; and we can’t just copy the fossil answer for the renewable question because they are fundamentally opposites. So in order to ditch fossil fuels and mass-adopt renewables, we need to transition from a Just-In-Time system to Just-In-Case *FIRST*.

The average cost of a data-centre is $475M [Terrapin Group], and the average cost of utility-scale battery storage is $148/kWh [International Energy Agency], which means that for the price of just one data-centre we can install 3.2 GWh of storage capacity for renewable energies.
So what we have here is the opportunity to kill two birds with one stone, and stop data-centres while at the same time increasing renewable energies, by reallocating the resources already available from the former to the latter. By prioritizing the construction of Battery Buffer-Zones, we can transition from a “fossil” JIT to a “renewables” JIC infrastructure, and also use all the green energy we’re *already producing* instead of throwing it away.
