Rename James Madison High School, Portland, OR

Rename James Madison High School, Portland, OR
The Issue
James Madison owned over one hundred slaves. As “Father of the Constitution,” he helped enshrine the practice of counting of Black people as 3/5ths of a person into our nation’s founding document. As President of the US, Madison called indigenous people “perfidious” and “savage,” and he unleashed the full might of the army against Native Americans at Tippecanoe. Yet, despite his racial bigotry and exploitative actions, our high school is named after James Madison. We call upon Portland Public School Board to announce it will change our school’s name. As one of Oregon’s most diverse schools, we demand the school be named after someone who represents the values of diversity, inclusion, and equity so that all our students feel welcome and so our community can be proud.
