francine furtado started this petition to Port Washington Board of Education

While we are inspired by the proposals in Dr. Hynes' June 3rd letter addressing racial injustice, as well as the points made during the June 5th Diversity Committee meeting under the leadership of Board of Education President Nora Johnson, we--the residents of Port Washington--would like to underscore, through this petition, the wide community support for these initiatives.

We encourage the administration and Board of Education of the Port Washington Union Free School District (PWUFSD) to be strong advocates for the elimination of racism through all avenues available, including the hiring of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC).

We would particularly like to see more BIPOC in positions of administrators and teachers, coaches and counselors.

Just 7.6% of the PWUFSD's teachers were BIPOC during the 2018-19 school year, while over 30% of the district's public school students were BIPOC.  Let us work toward eliminating this gap, and building a school faculty and administration that is representative of the student body.

Not only is it advantageous for ALL students to be exposed to, engage with, and learn from educators of all racial/ethnic backgrounds, research shows that educational attainment of students of color is enhanced by exposure to same-race teachers

Additionally, racially and ethnically integrated settings:

  • spark students into deeper, more critical thinking;
  • prepare children to be citizens of a diverse society; and
  • undermine perpetuation of racial prejudices.*

Please join along in urging the Board of Education to strive for increased diversity among our teachers, administrators, counselors and coaches, to further strengthen this critical component of our flourishing community.

Thank you.
