The Issue

Representing the steadfast residents of Port Richmond, we (Port Richmond Neighborhood Action ~ Neighborhood Association) share a compelling narrative of resilience and community spirit. Known to many as "The neighborhood that fends for itself" and "The neglected neighborhood," we are a population that should not be overlooked any longer. Our story started in the '60s when the 24th Police District moved out, (population then under 800) leaving us to share resources with Kensington. Our community grew (population 2010 approx 30,000 now, approximately 60,000) and with it, the challenges we face with crime increased.

Changes in our population and shifts in crime rates demand that we receive a police substation in Port Richmond. Adaptation to our changing dynamics has led us to realize the pressing necessity for localized law enforcement resources. The shared arrangement with Kensington is straining the system, resulting in a reduced capacity to combat crime efficiently. It's no longer sustainable.

While the 24th Police District does its utmost with the resources at its disposal, the challenges have become too big for that one District to handle effectively. The existing shared resources with Kensington are significantly stretched, impacting law enforcements ability to address the needs of our rapidly growing community adequately and effectively. A dedicated substation in our area will not only alleviate the burden on Kensington but will ensure our communitys' safety.

This appeal is not just another demand; it is the plea of every resident of Port Richmond, each with their unique story of living in "the neighborhood that fends for itself." It's time to shift this narrative. We deserve more. We urge the City to evaluate the current state of affairs and establish a police substation exclusively for Port Richmond. Our safety is at risk and will continue to be. Please sign this petition and join our effort to ensure a safer future for our community.
