PLEASE SAVE THE COSY NOOK

The Issue

"One of Port Erin’s most iconic buildings is set to be demolished.

Commissioners have backed a motion to knock down the Cosy Nook cafe on the end of the sea front by five votes to three.

A planning application for a replacement beach-side venue is still under consideration.

The traditional Manx cottage building has been vacant since its previous tenants left in May last year.

Both the public and the local authority have been at odds as to what should be done with the popular former cafe.

Dawn Sim’s motion to demolish the property received support from fellow commissioners Phil Crellin, Barbara Guy, Gerry Callister and Nick Watterson.

Chairman Godfrey Egee opposed, as did Adrian Tinkler and Steve George.

A raised, three-storey building which can be used as an evening restaurant is detailed in the proposal submitted to planners.

It would be powered by a mix of solar panels, wind turbines and air source heat pumps to meet environmental needs, and also include improved accessibility.

However, it’s not yet known if the design will be approved.

Meanwhile, a survey undertaken by Rushen Heritage Trust found majority of residents in the village were opposed to the plans.

The organisation says it’s ‘formally against’ the redevelopment following the ‘decisive’ results of its online survey."

How can just five people justify the demolition/future of the iconic Cosy Nook Cafe ?
Five people who were elected by the community to (allegedly) serve the community ?
How can they be so selfishly minded
