Pope Theater Program and Funding

Pope High School has been without a drama program for about ten years. Many students at Pope participate in theater after school as an outlet and a learning opportunity. Theater is beneficial to a student's education, high school experience and overall well being according to recent studies. Having a drama program with class time, curriculum, and a teacher in local schools has proven to better test scores (including the SAT and ACT), lower absence and dropout rates, and most importantly, help develop good social skills, public speaking skills, empathy, and communicative skills in students. Students at Pope are at a disadvantage because we don't have the opportunities or teaching that students at other local schools receive. Our funding is minimal and support from our school seems to be even less. We need theater at Pope; this is a fact that is undeniable. Our theater students have waited around for a change for all too long. Now is the time to stand up for what Pope needs, and what our students need. Now is the time. Today is the day. Pope High School needs an academic theater class and we as students do not plan to stop speaking for what we deserve until we receive it.
