Stop herbicide spraying on Pope lands in North Kitsap

The Issue

In 2011 Pope Resources created a website called "It's Your Backyard" promoting environmental stewardship, conservation and recreation on their properties in North Kitsap. Now they have been approved to spray chemicals in the Hansville area that are possibly carcinogenic to humans, and moderately toxic to soil biota, amphibians, fish and mammals.

We do not want our backyard sprayed!
Signed, concerned citizens.

Responded
Thank you for signing the Change.org petition this past summer urging Pope Resources and state decisionmakers to halt the application of herbicide spraying in Hansville, WA on the Kitsap Peninsula. I am the Washington State Senator that represents Hansville and your petition was forwarded to me. I have been fighting to reduce pesticide use and drift in the legislature for years, and I share your concerns. I and my office were in contact with the Commissioner of Public Lands, staff at the Department of Natural Resources, and Pope Resources regarding this application and the need to look at different and safer alternatives. If you do not live in the area, you may not have heard that the company postponed the decision to spray, pending an appeal made by the community to the Washington State Pollution Controls Hearing Board. The postponement of the decision to spray is a nice win for the community, and allows a broader discussion of how best to manage this future forest. Thank you for your advocacy, State Senator Christine Rolfes 23rd Legislative District, Washington State
