Urge Pope Francis to Stop Firing LGBT Church Workers, Meet Margie Winters, LGBT Catholics

Margie Winters, the former Director of Religious Education at Waldron Mercy Academy, a school sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, was fired this summer for her same sex marriage to her partner, Andrea Vettori. Margie's exemplary ministry of eight years to the school community brought the Catholic faith alive to students, parents, and faculty alike. Year after year, she consistently garnered positive reviews from parents and staff while being awarded with increased responsibilities at the school. Her work was never questioned.

In June Waldron Mercy Academy informed Margie that her marital status had come to the attention of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia consequently giving the school no choice but to fire her. Although the Archbishop of Philadelphia, Charles Chaput, has denied he was involved in the decision, he continues to praise both the school and the Sisters of Mercy for their decision and call it “commonsense”.

Since her firing, Margie and Andrea have directed their energies towards reforming the Catholic Church's stance on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons, in particular, in the area of same sex marriage.  They believe that all persons of faith, regardless of their sexual orientation, have gifts to offer that can enrich the lives of the Catholic community.  Based on Catholic Social Teaching, the social justice teachings of the Church, they believe that the Church should extend equal dignity and protection from firing to members of the LGBT community.

Margie and Andrea are asking for three things:

1--To meet with Pope Francis, whom they believe is open to the witness and stories of the lives of LGBT persons.

2--For Pope Francis to call for an end to firing LGBT Church workers until there can be a conversation in the Catholic Church regarding the treatment of LGBT workers, with LGBT persons at the table.

3--For Pope Francis and the Church to extend full inclusion and participation rights to all LGBT persons regardless of their marital status.
