Please ask the leader of the Catholic Church in Republic of Korea (South Korea), Cardinal Andrew Yeom Soo-jung, to stop encouraging his country’s Catholics to eat dog meat.

Dog meat has become a symbol of Korean Catholicism since the 19th century, when Catholics were persecuted and had to flee to the mountains. They were starving and were forced to eat dog meat to survive. Obviously the situation is very different today- no one is starving in South Korea but the Catholic Church likes to celebrate their martyrs by eating dog meat. Indeed it is a major promoter and buyer of this product. They serve it at church events, and encourage their congregation to eat it and foreign visitors to try it.

We feel this is a very bad reflection on the Catholic Church and on the current pope, Pope Francis, who promotes and has shown great compassion towards animals. In South Korea dogs raised for meat are kept in appalling conditions in dog farms until they are brutally tortured to death by such means of beating, hanging and boiling alive. Surely people who represent God and goodness should not be promoting such a cruel industry?

We hope you will join us in encouraging Cardinal Andrew Yeom Soo-jung to end the consumption of dog meat amongst his followers.

Le pido por favor que le la exija al lider de la Iglesia Catolica en la Republica de Corea, el Cardenal Andres Yeom Soo-jung, que deje de animar a los católicos de su país a comer carne de perro.

La Carne de perro se ha convertido en un símbolo en el Catolicismo Coreano desde el Siglo 19, cuanto los católicos fueron perseguidos y tuvieron que huir a las montañas. Estaban hambrientos y se vieron obligados a comer carne de perro para sobrevivir. Obviamente la situación es muy diferente hoy en día - nadie está muriendo de hambre en Corea del Sur pero a la Iglesia Católica le gusta celebrar a sus mártires comiendo carne de perro. Tienen una creencia equivocada de que cuanto más sufre el perro, mejor los beneficios para la salud y hace la carne más sabrosa. Seguramente las personas que representan a Dios y la bondad no deberían estar promoviendo una industria tan cruel?
