Polytechnic University of the Philippines-Senior High School Admins, #LeaveOurHairAlone
The Issue
Several cases regarding the "standard haircut" for Senior High School students in Polytechnic University of the Philippines main campus have arise again.
Last July 8, 2018 PUP KASARIANLAN together with Atty. Jazz Tamayo of Rainbow Rights and BJ Eco of BABAYLANES Inc. went to the PUP SHS administration office and had the issue addressed. Both parties had their fair chance to be acknowledged and have arrived at the desired agreement. The PUP SHS admin said that they prohibit such discriminatory policies. (You can read the full statement here)
This year, a number of senior high school students have, again, reported that the PUP SHS admin will not give their requirements and issue other certificates needed for their graduation if they do not have the haircut. Other reports said that their photos that were required to graduate was given back because they have a long hair.
Regardless of the students' Sexual Orientation and/or Gender Identity, they should be able to express themselves anyway they deem. Department of Education's policies (specifically the Child Protection Policy and Gender Responsive Education Policy) further protects the rights of the children against any form of discrimination.
Help us be heard by the Polytechnic University of the Philippines senior high school administration and ask them to #LeaveOurHairAlone. Make the campus a safe space for expression and being comfortable with how one person look. LET OUR CHILDREN GRADUATE WITH THE HAIRSTYLE THAT THEY WANT. LET THEM EXPRESS THEMSELVES. #LEAVEOURHAIRALONE
