Help keep the Alturas Elementary School in our Community!
The Alturas Elementary School has been an educational institution in our community for over 70 years. Thousands of students, teachers and administrators have come through that door and gone on to have much success in their life because of the knowledge that they have retained from our tiny but mighty community school. Alturas Elementary school has been a blessing to our community and been a constant source of hope for our community children for decades. However, on October, 29th, 2021 it came to our attention that there are plans in the works to completely demolish our school and move its teachers, staff and students 7 miles away across Highway 60 to a new school only 1 mile from another fully-functioning elementary school. On top of that, the plans for the current location of the elementary school after the building is torn down would be to be used as a storage lot for the school board which would be an ugly eyesore for our community and bring down property values. The school boards main arguments for demolishing our school and moving it out of our community completely are 1) lack of public utilities and high upkeep costs of the schools well & 2) a decrease in school enrollment. Here are some solutions to those issues-1) in fact there are public waterworks in Alturas and we could explore the possibility of connecting to the water supply offered in Alturas which could potentially save the school board thousands of dollars yearly and 2) many local area schools are over-capacity(i.e Chain of Lakes Elementary), we could restructure the district lines and usher those students our way. Alturas is on the edge of a boom with hundreds of homes on the verge of being built in recent months and many young families will be looking for a safe and easily accessible school to send their small children to. Our small community has fallen on hard times in recent years due to our main source of business and income, the citrus Industry being ravaged by greening. Many of the students in our community depend on this school and the love it provides not only for emotional support but their sense of stability and in some cases their only daily meals. Due to Alturas being a rural community with very little broadband strength many students use the schools internet connection as their only source of wifi for educational purposes. Alturas Elementary school is known for its small quaintness with a family feel but also is known for the high level of education that comes there from. Not only is Alturas Elementary School our small communities only source of education but also, area businesses depend on the school for their daily foot traffic (i.e The post office, Lees Country store, community churches, etc). We must strive to keep our school in our community, we are all for getting a NEW school but only if its located in the PRESENT location!
