Why this petition matters

Started by Jocelyn Rodriguez

My grandmother had been in her twenties during the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s. She had followed protests closely and had strongly supported the equality of both men and women. Now, myself being a young college student, I ask her if she believes if the amendment will ever get passed. Her reply, "never with the men in charge". I want to fight to prove her wrong.

The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), first kicking off in the early 1900s, and then again in the 70s' and 80s' is now being proposed again after the House voted to extend the deadline after its original deadline in 1982 had not been met. According to news source, NPR, legal experts have argued that the "amendment could protect women economically, like helping them get more equal pay and preventing pregnancy discrimination." However, opponents to the ERA argue that the amendment's only goal is to receive tax-funded abortion.

According to the official website of the ERA, without this amendment, "the U.S. Constitution does not explicitly guarantee that the rights it protects are held equally by all citizens without regard to sex. The first — and still the only — right that the U.S. Constitution specifically affirms and applies equally to women and men is the right to vote". With a strong political force moving through the United States right now, women need to band together to create a better future for the next generation of women.

Let us start a new generation of fearsome, strong feminists.
