My brother in law Sheku Bayoh was only 31 years old and a dad of two when he died in police custody. We have yet to find out the truth of how he died.
Sheku was put in restraints, batons, Pepper and CS spray was used. The police have given us many different accounts of what happened. They cannot even tell us how many officers were at the scene, What we want is the truth. That’s why we have started this petition calling for justice for Sheku.
It has been more than two month since Sheku died and we still don't have answers. How did Sheku possibly die in the hands of the police? We are calling for PIRC (Police Investigation Review Commission) to contact the right experts in their fields and to conclude their investigation so that the findings and evidence can be reviewed.
The police officers who were at the scene took over a month to come forward to give their statements to PIRC. None have been suspended -- instead the officers continue their day job and go on holidays and having spur treatments. Our family is left to pick up the pieces and try to find out what happened ourselves. But we can't challenge any of the misinformation given to us by the police until the investigation report has been released.
We know from history that when a Blackman die in police custody they are normally associated with gangs, violence, drugs, weapons or terrorism. We will not be surprise if any of these stereotypes are used.
That's why we're demanding action. The PIRC must be forced to act and we need the Home Secretary Theresa May and Cabinet Secretary for Justice Michael Matheson to speak up about this injustice.
Around the world we have seen how public pressure has led to action on deaths in police custody that might have otherwise been covered up or ignored. That's why we need your help to get justice for Sheku.
A dead man can’t talk or defend himself. But we need answers. We demand answers. Please sign our petition.
Thank you,
Ade Johnson
