Sheku Bayoh was laid to rest a week ago on 7 June. It was wonderful to see how the Kirkcaldy community came out in love of Sheku and of support the family in their call for the police to tell us the facts of how Sheku died. The power of the community is so important in such situations - we need the people of Kircaldy and all of Scotland to demand and make a noise - and the rest of us will support. People came from around the country to be there on that day - the march, grew and grew to hundreds of people. I wanted to join them but my aunt (Sheku’s mum) asked me to stay in the hearse with her. My aunt’s greeting to me on the morning of the funeral – the first time I had seen her since the news of Sheku’s death - was, “Hello my dear, how are you - have you eaten?” I couldn’t help but smile. That’s my Aunty. And for the rest of that day, I was reminded of the grace and dignity, of my Aunty Amie. She came to the UK to spend time with her four children, to go home having her youngest child and only son taken away from her. As she said, it wasn’t that he was ill, he was taken away from her, for no reason. There was a police presence throughout the day, from the time, the family went quietly for privacy to pray for Sheku at the mosque, before he was buried, they made themselves visible lurking on corners, and driving past in marked police cars which was I know upset her. She said her heart bled everytime she saw a policeman. But she was adamant on joining the growing group of people when we stopped outside Kircaldy Police Station for 2 minutes of silence. My Aunty Amie returned home to Sierra Leone today, where we know, family there will grieve with her. Although the 40 days memorial ceremony took place on Friday 12 June and the Bayoh family can start to think of their lives without the physical presence of Sheku the fight has only just begun to ensure that we get the truth from the police authorities. Thank you all for and please continue to support the Bayoh family to find what what happened to their Son, Brother, Father, Partner, Nephew, Cousin, Friend to so many. Thank you so much. change.org/justice4sheku https://www.facebook.com/pages/Justice-For-Sheku-Ahmed-Tejan-Bayoh/998270920191503
