Drop all charges against Doctor Andrew Agius, Pain Clinic Paola

The Issue

We are asking that the charges be dropped against Malta’s most caring doctor, who has done nothing but help and support his patients. Going out of his way to help his patients have a better quality of life and to live as pain-free as possible.

Is the Maltese Police force’s drug squad so desperate for a conviction, that not only do they attack a well-known professional doctor, raid his clinic but also strip search his employees, which included a CAVITY search of a 57-year-old grandmother and thrown into lockup on suspicion that they had cannabis on them? Does the drug squad truly believe a 57-year-old grandmother would be walking around with cannabis in her?

Disgusting is not the word for the way they are trying to destroy the reputation, business, and lives of those involved. And before you ask. No, the police still do not know why they are charging Dr. Agius. In front of a magistrate, the prosecution appeared confused themselves, changing their minds during the hearing and making themselves look foolish. The fact that the magistrate did not dismiss this case at that point is also extremely troubling. But to then try and throw into the confusion money laundering and trafficking, just goes to show how badly the police have messed themselves up.

This is how the whole tragedy unfolded in court:

Quote “The court at this stage in view of the deadlock, asked for clarification as to under what law the freezing order over the man’s assets was being requested. “People, there are three conflicting laws on this… you need to identify one.”

“We are charging him under Chapter 101 (the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance). Money laundering,” Arnaud said.

“So not under Chapter 621 (The Proceeds of Crime Act)?” asked the court.”

Dr. Agius however, has had nothing but a huge amount of support from all over the Island and it’s up to the very patients who he has been fighting for years to help and support, to now have his back.

And as for the good doctor not reaching out to the Malta Medical Association. It’s hardly surprising going by the comments from MAM President who is obviously holding some animosity towards Dr. Agius. The fact that the very organisation that is supposed to defend and protect their members, until proven guilty. Seem to already have passed judgement and that is of real concern.

Martin Balzan added that as per the Medicines Act, doctors should only prescribe medications, leaving their dispensary to outside pharmacists. “It’s a general principle that doctors should be paid for their professional opinion but shouldn’t profit off the sale of medicines, or it could pose a conflict of interest.”

And the fact that it seems they are “testing” the new cannabis law in court at the cost of the good doctors' reputation should be a real concern for us all.

We can only speculate as to why Dr. Agius has been targeted, but several comments range from the fact that he would not stuff an envelope full of cash, to that he has upset someone linked to the true and real crimes of the island and they are getting him out of the way.

So please help support Dr. Andrew Agius at this horrible time by signing our petition. By sending it to the Police complaints commissioner (professionalstandards.police@gov.mt ) Minister for Home Affairs, National Security and Law Enforcement, homeaffairs@gov.mt, and the current prime minister, Dr. Robert Abela MP, robert.abela@gov.mt we are hoping that this case will be dropped and Dr. Agius can get back to his life and business of helping his patients to the best of his abilities.

On a personal note and I know from reading a lot of the comments on lovin' malta, news articles, and Facebook. Dr. Andrew Agius is the first doctor for me in 14 years that sat and just listened without judging me, interrupting me, or rushing through the appointment. His solutions to my health and medical care were clear and precise and thanks to him I was able to go from a ridiculous amount of pain medication to a hugely reduced amount. Approx. 25% on what I was taking. I thank you Doctor.
