“A young male patient was admitted last evening at Chachol SDH, Malda with severe bouts of hemoptysis and shock. He was immediately attended in ER and thereafter in the Wards. Patient was attended by Three doctors including the Medicine Specialist, Dr. Goutam Mukhopadhyay. In spite of all resuscitative measures, the patient expired after about an hour or more. On declaration of death, the attendants started assaulting Dr. Mukhopadhyay with blows to his face and nose. Three of the nurses present there were also assaulted and manhandled. The hospital area was gheraoed by mob of more then 300 -400 locals and rampant violence and destruction to properties followed. Most of the healthcare personnels had to hide for shelter to save their lives. The crowd was ultimately dispersed by RAF accompanied with SDPO, District Adminstrative officers. Superintendent, Deputy CMOH and others also had to intervene in order to bring things back to normality so that the other patients can be taken care of. Injury reports and FIR is supposed to be done today. We are in touch with the doctors over there. But how long can we work under such circumstances, putting our lives in danger. Safety of Healthcare Workers MUST be ensured at all costs. Everything else can wait!” - as received.
