429 days have passed since the arrival of the first batch of garbage to the Philippine shores. To this date our government has incurred losses due to storage and demurage amounting to PhP59,876,680.00 or $1,495,136.81 in Canadian dollars. Rainy season has started, and our fears of garbage leaching have come true. The health of our people is at risk from the leaking garbage juice. Not to mention the environmental impacts the hazardous wastes can cause.
Despite the meeting and assurance from the Canadian Embassy that they will look into the matter, NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE TO PICK UP THE GARBAGE from the Port of Manila. The officials of the Canadian Embassy have seen before their very eyes the leaking garbage and they have smelled the foul odor emanating from the container vans. Despite seeing the actual garbage imported from Canada, the Embassy officials issued a statement acknowledging the fact the Philippines may return the imported garbage. We would like to reiterate our petition, Canada: pick up your garbage.
Philippines and Canada are both parties to the Treaty of Basel Convention. In the mentioned treaty, it is the exporting country’s (in this case Canada) obligation to transport the hazardous wastes to its country of origin. As the representative of the Canadian government, we urge the Canadian Embassy to do its part in facilitating the return of the said container vans back to the Canadian soil where it should be dumped. Under the Basel Convention, these wastes should be shipped back to the country of origin within 30 days. We now wait upon the CANADIAN EMBASSY TO SET THE TIME AND DATE WHEN THEY SHOULD PICK UP THE EXPORTED GARBAGE.
ANG NARS, Ban Toxics, Ecowaste Coalition, Greenpeace, Green Convergence, Mother Earth Foundation, PS LINK and Ateneo School of Government, appeal to the Canadian Embassy to facilitate the collection and deportation of the 50 container vans of garbage back to the Canadian soil.
