A week after the imported garbage from Canada was dumped in President Noynoy Aquino's backyard in Capas, Tarlac, Governor Victor Yap prohibited further disposal of the waste in the landfill. In the light of this event, Canadian Ambassador to the Philippines Neil Reeder said he was not privy to the shipment agreement between a private firm in Canada and the consignee in the Philippines regarding the more than 50 container vans of garbage now rotting at the container yard of the Bureau of Customs in Metro Manila. In a press conference, the envoy said the matter was brought to the attention of his embassy only recently after the container vans were opened to reveal garbage of household wastes and plastics. But definitely, these were not toxic wastes and the embassy was looking for best solutions in cooperation with the Philippine government on how to dispose this garbage, Reeder said. Despite the claims of the Canadian Ambassador, Philippine officials have failed to prove that the garbage is NOT hazardous. Filipino legislators: Representatives Neri Colmenares and Isagani Zarate, and Senators JV Estrada and Bong Bong Marcos filed for Congressional and Senate inquiry respectively. BAN TOXICS and other environmental groups in this campaign asserted the right of the Filipinos in the Basel Convention. It is Canada's responsibility to pick up the garbage that was exported to the Philippines. We challenge Ambassador Neil Reeder to be man enough and initiate action on the issue.
