OWNERS OF VALLCO: PLEASE RE-ENGAGE WITH CUPERTINO!

The Issue

We the undersigned, encourage Sand Hill Property Company, owners of the Vallco Mall, to re-engage with the City of Cupertino. Independent of how we voted on Measure D, we STRONGLY support your efforts to redevelop Vallco with community feedback.

We believe a development proposal that includes a balance of residential, retail, entertainment, office space, medical and even schools will enhance Cupertino’s attractiveness as a city.  Encouraging office workers--most especially Apple employees--to live, shop and dine all within Cupertino, will help mitigate commute traffic.

In addition, we ask you to retain the popular components of the proposal (AMC movie theater, ice rink, fitness center, and bowling alley) as you’ve currently planned.  Paired with your initiatives for sustainability, open park space, walking/bicycling paths, and the promised traffic mitigation and school benefits, you’ll have found your way to a winning formula.

Procedurally, we prefer development to go through traditional city channels and NOT ballot initiatives. The heart of good governance is employing our institutions and elected officials to do the work they were elected to perform on behalf of the community.

Summary: We encourage you to reconsider your intent to mothball the Vallco Mall property.   Instead, return to the City to complete the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) and negotiate with the Planning Commission and City Council.  This is a viable path forward.  We, the residents and neighbors of Cupertino, will support you.
