This petition is initiated on behalf of the sub-committee formed in a meeting of Executive members of the Central Board of Dawoodi Bohra Community (CBDBC) held on June 4, 2022. English translation of the petition and some of the practices we propose to eliminate are listed below.

Petition text as follows:

Hum Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat Udaipur ke mandarjaazel members Dawoodi Bohra samaaj mein beva auraton ki Iddat ka paalan Quraan aur Daim-ul-Islam ke mutabiq amal mein lane ke liye ahad karte hain, aur iske amal mein jo gair Shariyai kureetiyaan jud gayi hai un bandishon ko nahi maanane ke liye Central Board aur Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat se purzor maang karte hain ki woh is baabat turant ek karaardaad pass kar bevaaon par Iddat ke naam par ho rahi zyadtiyon se unhe nijaat dilayen.

English translation of the petition:

We, members of the Dawoodi Bohra community, demand a change in the observance of Iddat as practiced in our community today and pledge to follow the path prescribed in the Quran and Daim-ul-Islam. The inhuman non-Shariah rituals imposed upon widows (with passage of time) should be done away with so that widows are not put through unwarranted trials and tribulations. We ask that the Central Board of Dawoodi Bohra Community and the Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat act speedily and work towards providing relief to widows from these torturous non-Shariah acts.

The following are some of the non-Shariah practices we propose to eliminate:

• Being made to sit in a corner in white clothes
• Covering glass panes and mirrors with paper/cloth so that the widow may not see her reflection
• Doors and windows of her room kept shut or covered with only white curtains; no seeing the sky
• Ban on talking on the phone, reading the newspaper or watching TV (in case there is a photo of a man)
• No male doctor can visit her in case she falls ill
