Pledge: Health, Reason, and Virtue. Renounce: drunkenness, hazing, and misogyny

Pledge: Health, Reason, and Virtue. Renounce: drunkenness, hazing, and misogyny
The Issue
On my honor, I pledge to keep myself physically healthy, mentally awake, and morally upright, and to help other people at all times.
I will not make any pledge of friendship, let alone brotherhood or fraternity, with men who do not also take this pledge.
I will not exclude members on the basis of social class, wealth, caste, race, ethnicity, language or country of origin, athletic or military rank, test score, aptitude, or any criteria other than a desire and willingness to cultivate intellectual and moral virtue. The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop the idiocy.
CURRENT MEMBERS AND ALUMNI
[I call on my (former) fraternity to adopt this pledge as a dictum to be recited aloud by all new pledges. I renounce all pledges and dictums inconsistent with it, and call on all my frat "brothers" to do likewise. I declare that all "pledges" I made while intoxicated, deceived, or under duress to be void.] Remembering and adapting the scout oath.
WOMEN'S UNION and SORORITIES
[I pledge not to drink at any "social", or "party", of any so-called "greek fraternity", whose members haven't made this pledge, or who can't even speak anything in greek. I will not attend events put on by lewd frats of the baser sort, except only to raise awareness of this pledge and liberate its members. I will only do so in company with another sorority sister or friend from the women's union. I will save my love for men who respect women, respect the truth, and respect themselves. ]
FACULTY, PARENTS, ADMINISTRATION, and BOARD of TRUSTEES
I pledge to teach my students, sons, and daughters moral reasoning and virtue ethics. I affirm that knowledge of the right and the true is possible, and is or should be the goal of education. I renounce the dogmatic moral agnosticisms and universalisms of modern philosophy as a culpable form of ignorance or hubris or both. I acknowledge the existence of systemic injustices from the legacy of imperial colonialism, misogyny, jew-hatred and supersessionist ideologies, anti-black and anti-indigenous "scientific racism", and anti-semitism that this agnosticism enables and supports. I will no longer provide the intellectual cover for it to continue, by funding the miseducation of the young along these lines. Instead, I will teach a sound, practical, and non-dogmatic basis for ethics and critical theory based on and inductive analytic reasoning from evidence and experience, and deductive inference from self-evident first principles. For example, Aristotle for Everybody: Difficult Thought Made Easy (Mortimer Adler). And by the way, here are the Ten Philosophical Mistakes: Basic Errors in Modern Thought - How They Came About, Their Consequences, and How to Avoid Them (Adler) These are the best I can find, until better books can be written. On my website you can read my other curriculum recommendations for a post-apocalyptic philosophy
OPTIONAL CLAUSES TO BE DISCUSSED
PHYSICALLY HEALTHY AND STRONG
I will drink to life or health, but never to get drunk, hazed, smashed, wasted, or f---ed up.
I will learn how to treat a woman before I learn how to drink.
I will learn how to dance before I learn how fight.
I will learn how to defend myself and practice community self-defense, before I learn to chase a ball around the field.
I won't let a new pledge drink more than one beer until he can dance the chora successfully, and I will stop him (from drinking, not dancing) once he starts missing the rhythm or tripping over himself.
I won't elect an officer unless he perform one or more of the following: 1) dance the chora while wearing a toga. 2) play an instrument melodically or rhythmically. 3) sing in iambic pentameter.
MENTALLY AWAKE
I won't elect an officer unless he can give at least eight aphorisms of Aristotle, or seven sentences of Solomon. A sentence or aphorism in the original language counts for two. I will teach at least two to every new pledge, and not initiate him until he can recite them successfully.
Nichomachean Ethics I.i
"Every art/technique and every method, likewise every praxis and pursuit, seems to aim at some "good". Therefore "the good" has been rightly declared as "that at which all things aim". Ethics I.i
The words of Lemuel, king of Masa, which his mother taught him (as reported by Solomon):
אל למלכים למואל, אל למלכים שתו יין, ולרזנים אי שכר פן ישתה וישכח מחקק, וישנה דין כל בני עני,
Wine is not for kings, O Lemuel; not for kings to drink, nor any strong drink for princes. Lest they drink forget what has been ordained, and infringe on the rights of the poor. Give strong drink to the perishing, and wine to the embittered. Let them drink and forget their poverty, and put their troubles out of mind.
Speak up for those who are mute, for the rights of all the destitute. Speak up, judge righteously, champion the poor and needy. Proverbs 31
Accordingly, I won't drink at a keg party until saturday night. Friday night (and perhaps thursday) is for wine at the dining hall with dinner. First study, then work, then we will drink to remember.
MORALLY UPRIGHT
CONSENT and PARTNERSHIP
I'll talk about sex with my partner without pressure or deceit. Consent must be informed, it can be withdrawn, and sex is best when both are sober. The physical act of sex shouldn't be separate from the intellectual, ethical, spiritual, and emotional aspects of partnership.
I will never use my powers or priveleges to exploit, demean, or humiliate another person sexually. I deplore 1) adultery, 2)pederasty 3)incest 4)bestiality and will not joke or make light of these practices, or stand silently by while others are doing so. With those who cultivate "safe spaces" for exploitation and rape, and create unsafe spaces for women and other victims to speak out, I renounce all friendship, partnership, and "fraternity" and urge them to turn and repent.
MODESTY > NAKEDNESS
I will not expose my own nakedness in public. I won't ask younger pledge to expose his nakedness or to defile himself with anything that is humiliating to him. I won't hire or watch professional strippers, watch porn, or do any other lewd acts, "keep score", or boast of "conquests".
SOBER PERFORMANCE > DRUNKEN FAILURE
I will possess my vessel in honor, and limit my drinking so that I am coordinated enough to escort my lady-friend back to her place safely, and to benefit her as much as she pleases. And about what happens between us, I not will boast about it afterward to the fraternity.
INITIATION CLEAR and UNHAZED
I won't coerce a pledge to drink against his will, or urge anyone to drink to drunkenness. I will accept "No" as an answer to any personal request. I won't ask a pledge to humiliate himself or make a game out of this. If a friend of mine is being hazed in another fraternity, I will report it to the interfraternity counsel chair, or to the dean of men. Instead I will make challenges and ordeals for new pledges that test and cultivate skill, merit, knowledge, and service.
SERVICE
I won't initiate a pledge until he goes to student body government meeting, a faculty student affairs council meeting, or a city council meeting and makes public comment. He should take notes and say something relevant to the agenda, and then recite this dictum publicly before all. Or he could whistle a tune, or rap a poem. Or he could straight out tell everyone what we don't like about the dean and the so-called "administration".
Man is a rational animal (Aris, et al) and I am a man. Therefore I will speak rationally. Man is a social animal, and a political, therefore I will speak for the good, the righteousness, and the peace of my college and community.
JUSTICE by LAW, NOT by FORCE of ARMS
Affairs of honor between me and a fellow I will handle before the fraternal counsel, between me and another student, before the student body judiciary counsel, between me and a professor, before the collegiate judiciary board. If called on to witness, I will not be silent. I will not slander or bear false witness. I will handle disputed verdicts by appeal rather than force.
POLITICAL SCIENCE & THE ARTS of DEMOCRACY
I renounce and deplore the following: 1) the authoritarian elitist state with communal wives and children taught by plato in his "republic", 2) the disgusting pederasty of socrates and the whole male culture of gymnastic nakedness, 3) and misogyny of some in the academy, in the lyceum, and in the broader culture who hold that women are merely deformed men and incapable of reason or virtue. 4) I also dislike epic poetry and trago-odeia, although the latter is the less bad of the two.
On the contrary I affirm the following are good 1) families, otherwise we wouldn't have parents, and the liberty under law afforded by a political constitution, a democracy being the best of the bad forms of government we have (Aris Politics) 2) TOGAS, which are usually better than both nakedness and business suits 3) WOMEN, who are capable of intellectual and moral virtue, worthy of friendship, and physically at least as beautiful than men if not more so. 4) I prefer lyric poetry to novels, epics, and other fictions.
SCIENCE + ART > Trago-odeia
The poets are liars, the prophets are deluded, the priests are corrupt, the "gods" themselves are often fabricated and sometimes demonic. "The truths" of various matters can discerned through analytic inductive reasoning about experiences that are common to all men, and by deductive inference from axioms of a science and from first principles that are self-evident. No "initiation" into esoteric knowledge is necessary. The "mystery religions" are elitist cults that are self-indulgent, addictively deceptive, and empty. The bachannalia is perverse and often violent. Misery and depression are the natural consequence, because its what we deserve for our errors and self-indulgence. Purification comes from the acceptance suffering as a just reward. (Aris Poetics, Maimonides, et al) But lets not turn it into an art form. Why perpetuate this system of error for the sake of a catharsis that is merely aesthetic? Instead, study and practice ethics and political science. "A generation comes and a generation goes, yet the earth abides forever. The sun rises and the sun also sets, and hastens back to the place from whence it came. The wind blows southward, and turns about unto the north, it whirls about continually, and the wind returns again according to its circuits. All rivers run to the sea, and yet the sea is not full; unto the place whence the rivers come, thither they return again." (Sol Ecl) Think upon the prime mover of all this, alone unmoved by anything that we can perceive (Aris, Metaphysics). Instead of cycling between trago-odeia and bachannalia, contemplate things that are universal and unchanging and learn the intellectual virtues of SCIENCE as demonstrative reason. contemplate things that are useful and learn the intellectual virtue of ART as productive reason - the ability to make things. (Aris Ethics) free your mind from error and delusion, repent of your errors and hubris, and don't return to them. This is the true CATHARSIS.
MARRIAGE > Celibacy OR promiscuity
The most stable and satisfying economic organization is found not in the frat house, nor the dorm hall, nor the monastery, but in the natural sexual partnership of marriage. I will never hold the fraternity to be more important than marriage. I will not scoff at a member who leaves the frat house in order to get married, but rather celebrate with him. Marriage and co-habitation prior to graduation should be encouraged, rather than promiscuity in dorm halls. A male and female student who form a contractual relationship should be permitted to live as "room-mates" and domestic partners. The college should support women students by giving them the choice to bear children and become mothers, rather than denying them choice by pressuring them to have abortions or take leaves-of-absence. The college should also support young fathers, and until it does, the fraternity pledges to do so. The decision whether or not to have children should be made without coercion.
Regarding young men, any so-called "vow" of celibacy will be considered void, since it contravenes the higher law of nature and of nature's God. A member who as taken such "vows" in a religious or military order is invited to disobey them at any time and get married, and we will celebrate with him. Also we disclaim all prohibitions on marriage based on bogus theories of "scientific eugenics" or "racial hygiene." Love, sex, and marriage should not be suppressed or repressed any more than it should be pursued for vanity or exploited for self-indulgence.
