Claregalway village in Galway has traffic jams on a daily basis, that affects the locals on a safety and environmental level. It also affects those that have to drive through the village on their commute, and regularly doubles people's travel time. Emissions from cars sitting in traffic also negatively impact the environment. 

The government's hope that the M18 would reduce traffic throughout the village didn't have the desired effect. Figures from a November 2021 TII report (measured cars only) states that one morning in question, nearly 3,000 cars travelled the N83 between 7am and 10am - this figure reflects in the twice daily bottlenecks travelling through Claregalway village.
