The sheer scale of this proposal is preposterous. Imagine the Manhattan skyline rising from the sea—not once, but more than seven times over. The proposal would install 91 wind turbines, each taller than The Shard, the UK’s tallest building, across 448 square kilometres of sea around Iona and Mull—an area more than 7.6 times the size of Manhattan and larger than the cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh combined.
Beneath the surface, the infrastructure would be equally vast. Giant foundations would be anchored into the seabed, linked by offshore substations and a network of high voltage export cables. Years of industrial construction, piling, dredging, heavy vessel traffic and ongoing maintenance would permanently industrialise one of Europe’s richest marine ecosystems.
This proposal is presented as a climate solution. Every genuine climate solution should be judged across its full life cycle. That includes the mining and processing of enormous quantities of steel, concrete, copper, rare earth minerals and other materials, global manufacturing and transport, years of marine construction, decades of maintenance and eventual decommissioning. It should also account for the permanent industrialisation of one of Europe’s richest marine ecosystems and the loss of the climate stability and ecological resilience that healthy seas already provide.
Protecting intact ecosystems is climate action. Climate solutions should reduce emissions while strengthening the living systems upon which climate stability ultimately depends.
These waters are home to whales, dolphins, seals, seabirds, fish, shellfish, kelp forests and countless other species. They already sustain food production, livelihoods, biodiversity, community resilience, climate stability, pilgrimage, tourism, peace and the health of a living marine ecosystem.
For more than 1,500 years, people have travelled to Iona seeking peace, sanctuary, healing and a profound connection with nature. The sea surrounding the island is part of that experience. It is not an empty space awaiting industrial development. It is a living ecosystem that already provides immense public benefit.
This proposal is being promoted by a multinational energy company. The permanent consequences would be borne by local communities, wildlife and future generations.
Very few ancient, functioning marine ecosystems remain. Once industrialised, they cannot simply be restored. We have a responsibility to protect places that continue to sustain life in extraordinary abundance.
