On behalf of the Asbestos Diseases Society of Australia, THANK YOU to everyone who has supported our petition for a lasting memorial to the thousands who have fallen from deadly asbestos related diseases. It is time to formally honour these people and their families, for losses that were foreseeable and could well have been prevented.
A memorial is essential. We know our community is still being exposed daily to ageing asbestos products (there is one new case every 12 hours), as well as through the contaminated but very beautiful gorges in Wittenoom and the Hamersley Ranges of Western Australia.
We believe this memorial will be a strong deterrent to organisations looking to take shortcuts with the lives and safety of workers, the community and the environment. It is a reminder that there are good people like Robert and Rose Marie Vojakovic, the Committee of the ADSA and other fighters willing to stand up and not let these deadly actions prevail. Perhaps once the extent of death and disease is truly exposed in a memorial, we may get the dedicated research funding necessary to save lives in the future. So, please, continue to share our petition.
