Aug 27, 2014 — http://us.whales.org/campaigns/wdc-calls-on-world-association-of-zoos-and-aquaria-waza-to-help-end-dolphin-hunts WAZA claims none of its members acquire live dolphins from the dolphin hunts in Japan. But the Japan Association of Zoos and Aquaria (JAZA) is a member institution of WAZA, and over 55% of JAZA-members continue to buy dolphins from these hunts! In 2004 WAZA , issued statements condemning the dolphin hunts: Members must … ensure they do not accept animals obtained by the use of methods which are inherently cruel. An example of such a practice is the catching of dolphins by the use of a method known as “drive fishing”. WAZA claims none of its members acquire live dolphins from the dolphin hunts in Japan. But the Japan Association of Zoos and Aquaria (JAZA) is a member institution of WAZA, and over 55% of JAZA-members continue to buy dolphins from these hunts! WAZA’s negotiations with JAZA have resulted in the ‘dolphin management protocol’ allowing for ‘herding’ of dolphins during the month of September for collection for captivity. These collections occur in the killing cove, use the same boats and hunt methods, and are conducted side-by-side with the slaughter of other species, such as pilot whales. This is still a hunt. The chase and round-up at sea, whether for collection for aquaria or for slaughter, is a traumatic process that results in death or injury of dolphins. Please sign the letter to the Executive Director of WAZA telling him we expect WAZA to do more to end the dolphin hunts and penalize those facilities that violate the WAZA Code of Ethics!
