The Toronto Globe and Mail story was published February 17, 2024. It is titled, A P.E.I. "mama bear" isn't done fighting. It addresses Andrew's journey and my efforts to lobby for a CTO amendment in the 2024 legislature spring session. THE THEME TODAY IS WATER.
I have been MAKING WAVES regarding the need to amend the recently legislated Community Treatment Order for the mentally ill. I have been challenging the PC government for many months to make an amendment in the 2024 spring session.
It is dangerous to TEST THE WATERS with the current CTO because it will be jeopardizing lives.
This is not going to be SMOOTH SAILING for the PC government, as they will be under the scrutiny of Islanders, Ontario residents, and the media.
There are 2011 signatures on the PLEASE SIGN ANDREW’S COMMUNITY TREATMENT ORDER PETITION.
The argument to amend the CTO will HOLD WATER because two CTO experts namely Dr. Richard O’Reilly and Dr. John Gray advised the PC government that their CTO is too restrictive, causing few Islanders to qualify. In fact, it is the most restrictive CTO in Canada!
I feel the mentally ill will be IN DEEP WATER should the PC government wait until after 24 months to make the amendment.
Do you think the PC government will let the mentally ill SINK OR SWIM? The PC government should embrace the New Brunswick CTO model which is deemed the most flexible and best CTO in Canada. Do you think they will do the right thing?
