The Issue

I want to present a petition to Caltrans with the support of your signatures, I would like to find out and propose that something be done to pit a barrier that might discourage Jumpers. 2 deaths in 4 days….. 2 people who felt that hopeless….. The posted signs aren’t enough. Driving over the bridge in Pine Valley every day as a community member feels like passing by a memorial of lost souls. Each parked car, each moment spent crossing, fills my heart with a heavy sadness and a sense of urgency. It’s not just me who feels this way; it's every family, every child in our community that bears the weight of these tragic events.

Suicide is never an easy subject to talk about, yet it's one that we must confront to bring about change. Recent observations on local social media have revealed at least 17 suicide attempts on this bridge, with two occurring just this week. These incidents highlight a pressing need for practical measures to prevent more lives from being lost.

The absence of official public data makes it difficult to gauge the full extent, but we cannot wait for the statistics to catch up with reality. Mental illness is a serious issue that often flies under the radar, and it’s crucial that we act now to protect our loved ones and ensure their safety.

We propose the immediate installation of a net or physical barriers on Pine Valley Bridge to prevent further suicide attempts. Such preventative measures have proven effective in many places around the world in reducing the number of suicide attempts from public structures. It’s time to prioritize the mental health and well-being of our community by making this bridge a safe passage for everyone who crosses it.

This plea goes out to the local government, transportation agencies, and community leaders to take swift action. By signing this petition, you will join us in demanding that our leaders address this critical issue with the urgency it deserves. We cannot afford to lose more lives in Pine Valley. Preventing suicides saves lives, heals communities, and gives hope to those in despair.

Please, sign this petition and help us make Pine Valley a safer place for all. Together, we can transform grief into action and bring about the change our community desperately needs.
