You previously signed a petition to save the Central Library. The Future of the Manatee County Downtown Central Library Is at Risk — Again.
We’ve learned that the Manatee County Commissioners are under renewed pressure to sell the Central Library property to a private developer — with plans to replace it with a 20+ story high-rise condominium. A drastically smaller library or media center may be tucked inside one of these private buildings, and possibly no longer part of the Manatee County Library System.
Yes, the library sustained damage from last year’s hurricanes. But rather than repair and reinvest in this essential public institution, some are pushing to eliminate it altogether.
We cannot let this happen quietly.
Your voice matters. The County has released a survey asking for public feedback on the future of the Central Library. We urge you to take a few minutes to complete it and make it clear that:
- The Central Library should remain publicly owned and managed/operated by Manatee County
- It should be restored, renovated or rebuilt at its current location, not relocated
- It continues to serve as a cornerstone of education, equity, and community in Bradenton
This library is not just a building — it’s a part of our downtown identity and a valuable public asset.
