Please Honor Freddie Mercury With A Statue in New York City

The Issue

Nov. 24, 2021 marked the 30th anniversary of the passing of Freddie Mercury, legendary singer of the band Queen. Yet, to this day there is not a single Freddie Mercury statue in the United States.

The unique vocalist who captivated the world with his unabashed style and flamboyant on-stage persona was an “icon” in the truest sense of the word, and his 1991 passing at just 45 years of age (officially due to bronchial pneumonia resulting from AIDS) was a tragic loss for the world.

Freddie Mercury remains a near-mythical figure today, almost three decades removed from his death. He was largely the focus of Bohemian Rhapsody, the excellent 2018 biopicthat earned actor Rami Malek an Academy Award for Actor in a Leading Role, and Queen is currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity — the band’s Greatest Hits album has recently entered the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 (almost 40 years after its release!).

The band’s songs are as popular as they’ve ever been, and that’s a testament to Queen’s undeniable creativity as a musical force as well as the magnetism provided by Mercury in nearly every facet of his career.

Freddie Mercury spent a few years in NYC in the 80’s and even owned an apartment on the Upper East Side. He loved New York with all his heart and as such, we, the fans of Queen request politely for a Freddie Mercury statue to be erected in New York City as a tribute to his tremendous contribution to music history.

Freddie Mercury is still dearly missed by millions of people and in today’s world, music culture is very important to remind us there's still beauty in life. It enriches our souls and our horizons. Please honor Freddie Mercury, one of the most recognised artists of the millennium, with the long overdue and much deserved statue in one of his beloved places - New York City.
