That is such a brilliant start. Our huge thanks to all of you, for your engagement and for your support for our Cambridge market..
The photo is one that was taken by Robert Bloor shortly before the first lock down; we think it is such a gem of an image and we are very grateful for his permission to use it for this petition. Such a delightful reminder of the colourful and vibrant market that Cambridge used to be. The one we all want to be able to visit and to enjoy, as well as buy our fresh produce from...
Though it has been heartbreaking to see how much the market has been run down over these past few years, we can still buy lovely fresh produce there. Many loyal and absolutely fantastic traders bring their fresh, often local, certainly seasonal produce into the market for us all to buy.. What we value so much is that though you can buy strawberries, raspberries etc in the supermarkets, they so often come from all over our island, or even further afield, and are even more often over packaged. Most of the seasonal produce brought to our market has often not travelled very far at all. It is local and fresher. And this produce doesn't have those 'designed to be tempting' Supermarket offers - buy 3 for the price of 2. Offers that can so very easily end up costing more, because they lead to food waste..
It is this fresh, seasonal and local market that we are asking the City Council to put resources into..
Our goal, and our hope in the very immediate, is that our petition gathers momentum and a large number of signatures before the next Cambridge City Council - Full Council meeting on 24th July. We plan to go and speak at that Full Council meeting - it would be so strong to be armed with a very healthy number of signatures to this petition.
Essentially we hope people will join us in saying to Cambridge City Council:
“we don’t want our traditional market to disappear as a result of your plans, and we certainly don’t want a tourist playground to replace it. Please Cambridge City Council put very overdue resources into shoring up our traditional market, support its existing traders serving local people, and make it the very eclectic, colourful and fully vibrant market that it was only a very short while ago".
