I am a tenant with Springfield Housing Authority who has endured prolonged unsafe and unstable living conditions, including repeated maintenance failures, pest infestations, mold concerns, improper charges, lack of timely repairs, and serious issues involving key control and unauthorized access to my home. Alongside these conditions, I have experienced ongoing harassment and retaliation that left me feeling targeted, intimidated, and emotionally exhausted while simply trying to protect my home and my child. I am a disabled tenant living with multiple sclerosis, and the constant stress and instability have significantly worsened my health and ability to live safely. These issues were reported to U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the Springfield Police Department, Springfield community relations, the Illinois Attorney General, and the Sangamon County State’s Attorney, yet no meaningful action was taken. Even after my home was broken into and it was discovered that individuals had keys to my residence, nothing was done to protect me or hold anyone accountable. This is not an isolated experience—many others quietly endure similar treatment, afraid or worn down into silence. I am seeking accountability, a full investigation, and immediate corrective action to ensure safe, fair, and dignified housing for all tenants.
