We need your help to demand compliance with the law - OPI: CPD/CPB, NUMBER: 5100.08, CN-1, dated September 4, 2019, which states that no inmate shall be housed more than 500 miles from their home.

The Bureau of prisons has blatently ignored this law and thousands of families and children have been isolated from their loved ones as a result.

Mr. Jason Porterfield, a good Christian family man, is one of these individuals who has endured the hardships of imprisonment for eight long years more than 4 times the distance from his home as prescribed by law. The pain of being isolated from loved ones has been amplified by the added burden of distance. His family has been unable to visit him even once in over 8 years due to the debilitating health issues and physical disabilties they face.

It is not just an emotional torment, but also a blatant violation of law OPI: CPD/CPB, NUMBER: 5100.08, CN-1, which states clearly that no inmate SHALL be housed more than 500 miles from their home. 

It's critical to emphasize that in the United States, 2.7 million children have a parent in prison, and these families, would greatly benefit from the full enforcement of this law (Source: The Annie E. Casey Foundation).

In 2025, the Department of Justice published a study showing the more than 60% of Federal inmates are housed in violation of the law. Why are the breaking the law and not themselves sitting in prison cells?

Please help us to compel the Bureau of Prisons to rectify this violation and uphold Mr. Porterfield’s and his family's rights as laid out in the law.

We demand immediate action to transfer Mr. Porterfield to FCI Phoenix, within the stipulated 500 miles from his home, thereby enabling his long-separated family the opportunity to visit and offer their much-needed support. Because of poor health, physical disabilities and other hardships, the inordinate distance has not allowed a single family visit in over 8 years. This is unacceptable and cannot be tolerated.

This Law OPI: CPD/CPB, NUMBER: 5100.08 is of immense importance for the welfare and rights of inmates' families across the country. It is the families and children who are suffering  along with the elderly and disabled who cannot travel these long distances. The law, was designed with consideration for the hardships faced by the families of incarcerated individuals But it has yet to receive the attention and enforcement it deserves. And the Corrupt leadership in the Bureau of Prisons continues to get away with snubbing their nose at, and ignoring the law.

This law is not just a matter of bureaucracy, but holds the potential to positively transform the lives of thousands of families living in the shadows of imprisonment.
