Recently, President Donald Trump authorized the unrestricted culling of grey wolves.

Some people might think, "Wolves are just animals that prey on livestock, so why shouldn't we hunt them?"

The problem is that allowing unrestricted culling of wolves directly leads to ecological collapse.

Take Yellowstone National Park as an example. Wolves once went extinct in this area. As a result, the ecosystem was severely degraded due to the overpopulation of herbivores like deer. However, 70 years later, when wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone, the herbivore population was brought under control, and the ecosystem began to recover.

This case highlights a vital lesson: the critical importance of apex predators.

When the number of apex predators decreases, prey populations surge. When prey becomes too abundant, the ecosystem cannot sustain them.

Some might ask, "Why not simply eliminate the herbivores as well?"

However, attempting to artificially remove entire species fundamentally

misunderstands how ecosystems function. Herbivores are not just consumers; they play an essential role in seed dispersal, nutrient cycling in soil, and controlling dry vegetation that prevents catastrophic wildfires.

​Eliminating herbivores would collapse plant life, degrade fertile soil, and ultimately destroy the agricultural foundations that sustain human survival.

We must look beyond our own generation and consider future generations and the long-term sustainability of humanity.
