Boroondara and Whitehorse council elections are being held in October 2024.
The Streets People Love campaign is supporting and promoting the efforts of local government to create safe and pleasant streets for people to live, work, play and move in.
Streets that people love are safe and pleasant streets that enable people to live fulfilling lives while safely moving through their local communities.
These streets have wide footpaths, trees, traffic calming, safe routes for people on bicycles, scooters and other mobility devices and 30 km/h zones.
They enable all residents to be a part of their local community, to allow their kids to walk or ride to school, to access local services and safely get to where they need to go.
Candidates have been asked to sign this pledge:
“If elected Councillor, I pledge to allocate budget and street space to build streets people love, and ensure that residents of all ages and abilities can safely move around our council area, irrespective of whether they choose to walk, cycle, wheel, use public transport or drive."
The pledge includes:
- Increasing greenery, including tree planting and pocket park projects
- Implement 30 km/h speed limits in some built up areas in cities and regional centres
- Advocacy for improved public transport
- Building quality protected bike lanes
- Advocacy to State Government to ensure accessible tram stops are rolled out
- Support the development of new rail trail connections proposed in the Council area, including the Hawthorn to Box Hill Trail
- Reallocate road space in activity centres to build raised crossings and wider footpaths, install seating and create sociable spaces to make it safer in these areas
Ballot packs will be mailed out 7 - 10 October and must be returned post by 6pm Friday 25 October.
