The Issue
Our beloved German Shepherd Dog (GSD), Kayde, is on the verge of being seized and "disposed of" by the Kokomo Humane Society in Howard County. Kayde is not just a pet; he is an integral part of our family unit. His loyalty and protective nature have provided much-needed emotional security for my daughter and me, especially considering my disability.
Kayde is a well-behaved dog, acting reactive only within the boundaries of our secured backyard, a trait characteristic of GSDs. His compliance with social norms outside our property is evidenced during our frequent walks, where he displays remarkable restraint, even when confronted by kids, neighbors, or wildlife, responding only with quick, harmless glances.
Unfortunately, Kokomo Humane Society's misinterpretation of Kayde’s protective behavior is threatening this harmonious setup. They seek to label Kayde as a "dangerous dog," insisting on his confinement to a muzzle and cage while out back in our yard, however, the fence is his cage in my opinion. To build an enclosed cage, a condition incompatible with his natural behavior and our family's needs is something I cannot fathom as it is imperative that GSD exercise as a direct result of hip dysplasia and health.
Kayde's situation is not a standalone case. According to the American Kennel Club, GSDs are one of the top three breeds often misunderstood and labeled 'dangerous' due to their loyal and protective nature. We urge the authorities and the Kokomo Humane Society to reconsider their stance, to understand Kayde's nature as a German Shepherd, and revoke their previous decision on dog breeds' misunderstanding.
Please sign this petition to protect our beloved Kayde from being inappropriately labeled and inappropriately treated. Let us all take a stand for misunderstood breeds like German Shepherds and support families that rely on their companionship. Your signature can be our ray of hope. Sign now to save Kayde.
