Almost another year has passed since the battle was lost during the General Assembly to get Kentucky in line with all the other states in the nation regarding dogfighting legislation. UNITED Against Dog-Fighting, along with many other groups and agencies, have been working tirelessly throughout the year to ensure that we don’t have the same outcome this year as last! Let me tell you, it has been an uphill battle.
We are up against two major groups who have a lot of political pull and boat loads of money to back them up. One of them, in particular, stands against any and all animal welfare legislation, regardless of whether it affects them personally or not. They are against anything and everything, regardless of the many lives it could save! They couldn’t care less about the wellbeing of animals, including companion animals!
They are a group of hunters who use dogs for the purpose of hunting raccoon, rabbits, squirrels, and other wild animals. Our dogfighting legislation would not affect them in any way. However, one of their ridiculous claims is that if one of their hunting dogs gets loose and catches a rabbit or squirrel and tears it to pieces, they could be charged with a felony crime. REALLY? Let me ask you, as the intelligent and caring human beings that you are, do you seriously believe that would in any way be an outcome of our legislation? NO! ABSOLUTELY NOT! The legislation we are asking to be passed specifies canines only. Dog on dog fighting. It does not, in any way, affect hunters and their prey, as long as their prey are not companion animals. Yes, their dogs are domesticated and are also companion animals. However, as long as they are not pitting their dogs against each other, then there is NO PROBLEM! The law will NOT affect them. How could they possibly be against something that would keep two dogs from fighting until one of them dies? How can any human being with a heart want to knowingly stop any legislation that would alleviate suffering, abuse, and downright cruelty?
Unfortunately, due to helping out with a dire situation involving an animal shelter in Lincoln County, Kentucky, UNITED Against Dog-Fighting’s funds have been all but depleted. Although it was well worth it to save the lives of the 30 dogs that we saved from being euthanized, we now have very little ammo to go up against that group of hunters. That particular hunters' association seems to have an endless supply of money and pull with the politicians.
So, once again, we are asking for your help. No donation is too big or too small! Please help us in our fight to save precious lives from the atrocities being inflicted upon them by the evil dogfighters who make Kentucky their home due to the lax dogfighting laws. Help us save these innocent dogs who never asked to be treated so cruelly...these precious souls who want nothing more than any other dog...just to be loved and cherished! Thank you so much for all you do, and have done, to help make Kentucky a better place for companion animals!
