PUSD students for sexual assault and consent education

PUSD students for sexual assault and consent education

The Issue

With more women sharing about their sexual assault and rape stories on social media, it has become glaringly obvious that high schoolers lack the necessary education about sexual assault and what consent actually means. As educators, PUSD has the power to speak up about the prevalence and severity of this issue and has the power to take the necessary steps towards preventing sexual assault from occurring as frequently.

With the implementation of a mandatory class in high schools, teens will be able to gain the necessary educational tools to make appropriate decisions about sex. This will also empower girls by learning how to avoid situations in which sexual assault could occur. With this mandatory class, not only will girls be able to feel safe on and off campus again, but boys will have the essential knowledge of consent throughout their high school and college experience.

The school district needs to take action against this sexual abuse and assault problem, because frankly, girls will continue to feel unsafe, and boys will continue to grow up oblivious to the fact that sexual assault is a severe problem that they have the power to solve.

The education system has the opportunity to change the way men view and treat women, not only on campus when it is a liability, but also off campus. The responsibility of this sexual assault problem now falls to the school district, because it affects their students' safety. The way to accomplish this is to incorporate the issues of rape, sexual assault, and consent into the school curriculum as a year-long, mandatory class in order to reestablish their students' safety.
